One question I get over and over again is, “Why do I need to pay for a host? I already bought my domain.” Many people think all you need to do is purchase your domain name and you’re good to go. They find the whole host thing confusing. I am going to break through the confusion once and for all.
Buying a domain name is like buying a beautiful diamond stud earring. I’m not talking the fake stuff or the clip on kind. I’m talking a big, sparkling diamond with a solid gold post.
Now that you have the earrings, what are you going to do with them? No one can see them if you stuff them in your sock drawer. You need a place for them; a place where everyone who sees you can see them.
A host is the earlobe with the hole. This is where you will place those earrings so the world can admire them. Without that hole in your ear, the earrings are just shiny rocks. (Okay, sure there may be other places you can stick them but we’re going to keep this simple.)
That is the relationship between a domain name and a host in a nutshell.
